Nicholson Construction: Focus on Two U.S. Projects
Nicholson Construction is leading two major projects in the United States: the rehabilitation of the historic Union Station Tunnel in St. Louis, and its participation in the Hudson Tunnel Project between New York and New Jersey. Let’s take a closer look at these two landmark undertakings!
Union Station (St. Louis, Missouri)
The Union Station Tunnel Rehabilitation Project in St. Louis marks an important milestone in the modernization of rail infrastructure across the American Midwest. Originally built in the 1890s, the tunnel was designed for mail and baggage transfer between trains. More than a century later, the structure shows significant signs of deterioration, making a complete structural reconstruction essential to ensure its long-term integrity.
Nicholson Construction is responsible for installing approximately 400 micropiles, distributed among four different design types. These micropiles will reinforce the tunnel structure and guarantee its long-term stability, while supporting the MetroLink light rail network and the surrounding urban infrastructure.
The work, expected to last around ten months, is being carried out at night to minimize disruption to both rail and city traffic. Working conditions are particularly demanding, with confined spaces, restricted access, and complex logistical coordination between crews and stakeholders.
Hudson Tunnel Project (New York / New Jersey)
On the East Coast, Nicholson Construction is contributing to one of the largest ongoing rail projects in the United States: the Hudson Tunnel Project (HTP), led by the Gateway Development Commission. This program aims to modernize and improve the reliability of the Northeast Corridor, which connects New York and New Jersey — a vital route used daily by hundreds of thousands of passengers.
To execute this complex project, Nicholson Construction has formed a Joint Venture with Treviicos, called TNJV (Treviicos-Nicholson Joint Venture). TNJV is responsible for constructing the Hoboken Shaft, a key structure that will enable the installation and retrieval of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM).
The HTP includes two major components:
- The construction of 9 miles (approximately 14.5 km) of new passenger rail track, including a twin-tube tunnel under the Hudson River;
- The rehabilitation of the existing 115-year-old tunnel, which currently causes frequent delays and disruptions.
Nicholson’s scope of work includes the installation of diaphragm walls and rock mass grouting operations.
